As the company’s founder and leader Steyn has 17 years’ experience in Opencast Mining, Drilling and Blasting operations. He held several Senior Management roles at large opencast operations before starting BOTSE Drill & Blast (PTY) Ltd in January 2020. He holds a Surface Blasting Certificate and is a Graduate of GIBS Business School and UCT Management programs.

JJ VAN DER WALT
JJ brings over 18 years of diverse experience across specialised technical engineering and senior leadership roles. His career spans multiple industries, including Plant Operations, Metals, Mining, Asset Care and Maintenance, Logistics and Services, and Business Continuous Improvement.

He holds a Mechanical Engineering qualification, a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management and Administration, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Stellenbosch University, as well as having completed the Senior Executive Program – Africa through Harvard Business School.

SAMPIE BREEDT
Sampie was promoted to Operations Director in September 2024, advancing from his previous role as General Manager. This marked a significant milestone in his career. With over 24 years of experience in the mining industry, his journey began straight out of high school when he first entered the field.

BLASTING MANAGER
CHRISTO VAN ZYL
Christo began his mining career in December 2001, starting underground before moving into mine planning and later Business Analyst and Business Improvement roles. He then became a Blasting Engineer with one of South Africa’s largest OEMs, gaining extensive technical expertise, and later established a technical department in a start-up environment. In 2024, Christo joined BOTSE Drill & Blast (Pty) Ltd as Blasting Manager, bringing with him over two decades of experience in mining, business improvement, and blasting operations.

FRIK SNYMAN
Frik began his career at the Atomic Energy Corporation of South Africa, conducting physical and chemical tests in the laboratory before shifting his focus to the mechanical field. Over the years, he broadened his technical expertise and gained extensive experience in the drilling industry. In 2014, he completed his Opencast Blasting Certificate, further strengthening his skills. With 28 years in the drilling sector, Frik now serves as Plant Manager at BOTSE Drill & Blast (Pty) Ltd, bringing decades of hands-on knowledge and technical expertise to the team.

WALTER VAN
DER MERWE
Walter is a seasoned SHEQ professional with over 20 years of experience in the mining industry, spanning both surface and underground operations. He has extensive expertise in safety system implementation, compliance management, and team development across multiple sites.

A qualified Safety Officer, registered Assessor, Moderator, and Facilitator, Walter has successfully led SHEQ initiatives, risk assessments, and training programs aligned with ISO
and legal standards.
